A triple bottom line examination of product cannibalisation and remanufacturing: A review and research agenda

Increased momentum in support of a Circular Economy (CE) has motivated the exploration alternative production and value-retention processes that allow for decoupling environmental impacts from economic growth. Remanufacturing, key value retention process, can enable significant economic, social (also known as triple-bottom line) advantages. Given their competitive proposition, remanufactured products are often blamed by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) cannibalising new product sales revenues. Thus, remanufacturing is viewed high-risk, potentially even threat to conventional manufacturing activities many OEMs, triggering both active passive countermeasures protect market share. In cases, such actions lead reduced access cores remanufactures; they also work against uptake essential transitioning CE. To achieve CE, must be scaled; however, without clear understanding relationship between cannibalisation, OEMs may continue avoid and/or interfere systems. Further, alignment with systems-thinking we posit broadly-considered integration CE dimensions critical but lacking within literature. this end, systematic review paper aims clarify organize existing scientific literature about cannibalisation remanufacturing. We examine these contributions through an expanded Triple Bottom Line lens aligns recognized CE: social, environmental, management, policy, technology.
